A driver who police suspect was under the influence crashed into four cars Sunday night, injuring himself and a passenger.

San Pedro resident Joseph Maes, 22, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI after the crash, which took place around 10 p.m. Sunday at Placentia Avenue and Bastanchury Road, said Lt. Eric Point of the Placentia Police Department. Investigation into the crash is ongoing, he said, but police believe Maes ran a red light.

His car struck another in the intersection, then went on to hit three other cars, Point said. Maes and a female passenger were initially trapped in their vehicle and pulled out by Orange County firefighters, he said.

They were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for their injuries, and both were expected to survive, he said.
